.DISCUSSION...

* Moisture bands wrapping around an area of low pressure centered over the SoCal/Arizona border will bring 15-30% chances for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, primarily in the eastern Sierra south of the Tahoe Basin. High resolution forecast simulations are pointing toward showers continuing for southern Lyon, Mineral, and eastern Churchill Counties overnight. Elsewhere, it will be warm and dry today.

* A robust early fall storm originating in the eastern Pacific will bring a significant cool down, along with gusty winds and periods of showers to the region through much of next week. Southwest winds will begin to increase Sunday afternoon, with the strongest winds Monday and Tuesday due to a pair of cold frontal passages. Instability ahead of the front will help to produce increasing shower and thunderstorm chances across much of western Nevada, predominately near Alt-95 eastward, stretching south into the Eastern Sierra of Mono Co. The enhanced shear from the upper level jet, in particular on Monday, will help to organize and strengthen thunderstorms in western Nevada. Otherwise, there will be periods of showers across the region throughout the week. The highest probability for wetting rains (0.10"+) will be in the northern Sierra, northeast CA, and far northern Nevada into central and eastern Nevada. We may even see some light snowfall along Sierra peaks, as snow levels dip to around 9kft at times.

* Temperatures will be significantly cooler than what we have seen as of late, roughly 10-15 degrees below normal, or 50s and 60s in Sierra valleys, and 60s to around 70 in western Nevada valleys. Overnight lows will dip below freezing in most Sierra Valleys Tuesday-Friday morning next week, with upper 30s to mid 40s for most of western Nevada. If you live in a known cold spot, you may want to turn off your irrigation.

* General troughiness remains over the west, with additional shortwaves rotating into the main trough into next weekend. While it doesn`t look particularly wet, it will keep temperatures below normal. -Dawn

.AVIATION...

* There`s a 20% chance for a shower or thunderstorm to impact KMMH this afternoon between 21z-02z. Developing cumulus clouds may obscure mountain tops in the vicinity of the airport during this time frame as well. Overnight, showers may persist from KMMH- KYER- KNFL, but will be isolated in nature. Elsewhere, VFR conditions will prevail with light NE breezes this morning becoming W/SW this afternoon between 23-01z with speeds reaching up to 15 kts at terminals.

* Increased shower and thunderstorm activity Sunday and through much of next week with a strong area of low pressure moving into the region. Winds will also be on the increase, esp Monday/Tuesday with a pair of cold fronts, leading to LLWS and mountain wave turbulence concerns. Ceilings will be lower with terrain obscurement likely. -Dawn
