.DISCUSSION... Issued at 132 PM CDT Sat Sep 27 2025

A dry air mass over the Northland today after a cold front earlier this morning has lead to near critical fire weather conditions low RH`s and gusty winds. These conditions are expected to continue into tomorrow, though winds will be slightly lower.

At the same time, a high pressure will settle over the Ohio River Valley and keep us sunny and dry for the first half of the week. The high pressure may slowly be pushed off to the east for the latter half of the week, with slight (~10%) chances for precipitation. Predictability of where/when precipitation may occur is low at this time. In this kind of blocking pattern, it is common that models try to break it too quickly, so there is a decent chance this high pressure hangs around into next weekend.

.AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z MONDAY/... Issued at 624 PM CDT Sat Sep 27 2025

VFR conditions are expected through the period as high pressure remains dominant. A weak disturbance aloft moving through the Borderlands early Sunday morning will potentially lead to LLWS in KINL. Light and variable winds overnight become southwest to south on Sunday, becoming gusty for the NE MN terminals in the afternoon.

.MARINE /FOR NEAR SHORE WATERS OF WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR/... Issued at 951 PM CDT Sat Sep 27 2025

Evening Update: A Small Craft Advisory has been issued for Sunday afternoon and early evening from Grand Marais to Grand Portage. This is for southwest winds gusting up to 25 knots and the potential for waves to build to 4 feet. Expect strongest winds and highest waves near Grand Portage and waters farther northeast. Other than the issuance of a Small Craft Advisory, no other major changes were made to the forecast.

Previous discussion: Winds out of the northwest continue across western Lake Superior. Winds over the lake are less than over land, though a rogue 20kt gust is possible along the North Shore through the afternoon. Winds decrease tonight and shift out of the southwest for Sunday, with wind gusts up to 25 kts possible up near Grand Portage. Dry conditions continue for the rest of the weekend and into next week.
