.KEY MESSAGES...

- Temperatures remain well above average in the upper 80s to low 90s Friday, and 85 to 90 Saturday. A cold front Saturday night brings cooler than average temperatures Sunday into the middle of next week.

- Gusty southerly winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts to around 45 mph expected on Saturday. The combination of low humidity and strong wind gusts will bring elevated to near critical fire weather conditions across all of western and north central Nebraska.

- A few strong thunderstorms are possible Saturday evening, mainly west of Highway 83, with damaging winds the main hazard.

An upper level ridge will be in place over the region tonight with a weak surface trough across eastern Wyoming and eastern Colorado. This will maintain a southerly wind 5 to 15 mph. Lows will be mild from the mid to upper 50s.

Friday, surface low pressure will deepen along the Front Range as a deep upper trough moves into western Montana south across Nevada and southern California. Southerly winds will increase by afternoon to 15 to 30 mph. With H85 temperatures around 25C and deep mixing, raised highs a few degrees above the NBM, to highs from 88 to 92.

Southerly winds remain breezy Friday night at 15 to 25 mph. This will keep lows very mild from the upper 50s to low 60s west and mid to upper 60s east.

Ahead of the main upper trough, a potent shortwave trough will move across Wyoming and Colorado on Saturday, with strong southerly winds across most of the forecast area. South winds 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph are expected during the afternoon. Strong southerly winds with gusts up to 45 mph will continue Saturday evening ahead of an advancing cold front. As the shortwave trough lifts quickly northeast across the area Saturday night, a strong cold front will move through, with chance to likely POPs for showers and thunderstorms during the evening. A few strong thunderstorms are possible, mainly west of Highway 83, with damaging winds the main hazard. Behind the cold front, much cooler on Sunday, with highs from the upper 50s to upper 60s and a breezy northwest wind.

Shower chances return Sunday night, as the main upper trough interacts with a stalled frontal boundary across northern Kansas. Cooler in the upper 50s Monday. Chances for showers again Monday night, manly across the south. An upper trough over Hudson Bay and Great Lakes Tuesday into Wednesday will limit the warmup, with highs mostly in the low 60s. Upper ridging returns Thursday, with highs returning to near normal from the upper 60s to mid 70s.

VFR conditions will persist the next 24 hours across western and north central Nebraska. Winds today will remain below 10KT at the KLBF and KVTN terminals. At KVTN, a southerly wind will gust to near 20KT at times after 05Z, with prevailing 16015G23KT after 16Z Friday.

Temperatures remain much above average Friday in the upper 80s to low 90s. Southerly winds 15 to 30 mph during the afternoon will combine with humidity from 25 to 40 percent, bringing elevated fire concerns mainly near and west of Highway 83.

On Saturday, temperatures to reach 85 to 90, with humidity around 25 to 35 percent. However, strong southerly winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph are expected. With grassland fuels partial cured, large fire growth is possible. Elevated to near critical fire weather conditions are likely across western and north central Nebraska. A Fire Weather Watch is possible Saturday afternoon and evening a ahead of a cold front.

Saturday night, a cold front tracks across the region, bringing chances for wetting rains, mainly west of Highway 83. Cooler than seasonal temperatures Sunday through Wednesday will limit fire weather concerns.
