Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Columbia SC 858 PM EDT Tue Sep 9 2025

.SYNOPSIS... High pressure will dominate the weather pattern through the week with dry conditions and a slow warming trend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 7 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/... Key Message(s):

- Cool and dry

Surface high pressure continues to ridge into the Mid Atlantic States from New England. There is a large gradient in moisture over the forecast area with GOES derived PWAT values as low as 0.5 inches over the Upstate to 1.25 inches along the coast. Although too dry for fog at any location, we will likely see stronger radiational cooling to the west where temperatures should drop into the low to mid 50s while the eastern Midlands remain closer to 60 degrees for a low.

&&

.SHORT TERM /7 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... Key message(s):

- Surface ridging and calm weather expected throughout the middle of the week.

Strong high pressure remains in place across the NE CONUS, extending surface ridging, northeasterly flow, and dry advection down the lee side of the of the Appalachians. While some weak troughing will remain draped across the TN Valley and Appalachians during this period, PWAT`s well below average and surface dews in the 50`s will prevent any appreciable cloud cover let alone precip chances. Temps will steadily rise both Wednesday and Thursday, back near average, as persistent clear skies and solar insolation moderates the airmass a bit.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... Key message(s):

- Surface ridging and calm weather expected throughout the middle of the week.

&&

.AVIATION /01Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... High confidence in VFR conditions through the 24hr forecast period.

General troughing continues across the central and eastern CONUS, favoring surface high pressure across the Mid-Atlantic. North and northeasterly flow has been common across the area as a result, with very dry air filtering into the forecast area. VFR conditions are favored through the period, with the exception of AGS/OGB where ground fog may try to creep in at some point. Thinking it is too dry and a 15 knot low-level jet will keep things tame, though. Otherwise, expect a low-impact forecast!

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...A dry air mass will be over the region this week and no significant aviation restrictions expected.

.CAE WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... SC...None. GA...None.
