.DISCUSSION...

Today through Wednesday...

Warm and dry conditions are forecast through the weekend with upper level ridging generally in place. The only system of note to watch during this time is a shortwave trough that is expected to temporarily break down the ridge late tonight into Friday. While the core of this system will pass too far north to produce any precipitation for us, it will send a dry cold front through our area. This will bring breezy conditions and slightly cooler temperatures to the area on Friday. With this system continuing to trend a bit farther south, high resolution models have come in with a bit higher winds than previously advertised. However, the timing of the frontal passage, late tonight through Friday morning, is not very ideal for much of the area to see the strongest winds. Therefore, wind gusts in the teens to low 30s (mph) are currently forecast, strongest over the foothills west of Billings and over eastern Montana where the nighttime inversion looks to break before the strongest winds aloft exit the area. While the chance of seeing a 40 mph wind gust is moderate to high over the Beartooth Mountains ahead of the front, chances remain low along and behind the front over the plains. Look for winds to taper off across the area Friday afternoon and evening as low amplitude ridging builds back in over the region.

While a bit of energy/moisture from a low pressure system currently spinning over the California coast could push up into our area late Sunday into Monday, the pattern change towards cooler temperatures with increased chances of precipitation doesn`t looks to enter the region until sometime Tuesday into the middle part of next week. Will have to see how things trend over the coming days as uncertainty remains in how the responsible trough will eject east through our region.

Outside of high temperatures in the 70s to 80 degrees Friday, look for highs in the 80s to persist today through at least Monday. Arends

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions will prevail through the forecast period. Late tonight into Friday, a dry cold front passage will bring breezy northwest winds back across the region. With this, gusts will generally be in the teens to low 30s (knots), strongest over the foothills west of KBIL and eastern Montana. A period of increased southerly winds ahead of the front is also forecast over eastern Montana late this evening into tonight where a low- level jet is expected to develop. Arends
