...New AVIATION...

.DISCUSSION... Issued at 355 AM CDT Mon Sep 22 2025

The primary weather concern for this forecast will be the severe weather threat Wednesday. Otherwise, significant weather impacts are generally not expected as we go through this week and into the weekend.

Today through Tuesday night: Low level ridging over the southeast CONUS will continue to keep things hotter than normal in the near term. Given hot and unstable conditions and a subtle upper level shortwave trough crossing the region, scattered showers and a few storms will develop again later this afternoon, and a stray storm or two may briefly become strong to severe. For Tuesday into Tue night, the ridge is forecast to intensify some ahead of an approaching trough, and the increased anticyclonic flow and subsidence should help to suppress convective rainfall.

Wednesday: There is a marginal risk for severe storms for the entire area beginning early Wednesday morning and lasting through the afternoon. A shortwave trough will amplify and dig southward in the Mississippi Valley region Wednesday. As this happens and deep layer flow increases, a developing surface wave and strengthening warm sector will lower pressures over the forecast area. This will result in the threat for an organized convective system to move into northwest portions by as early as daybreak with damaging straight line wind hail up to quarter size being the main hazards. The convective system will then move across the remainder of the area Wednesday afternoon, possibly reorganizing and intensifying during the time of peak heating and destabilization over eastern/southern MS.

Late week through the weekend: Going into Wednesday night and Thursday, the threat for severe weather will end, but persistent cyclonic flow associated with trough passage will support additional rainfall. The trough will shift east and be followed by dry and milder air as we go into the weekend. Temperatures will be near typical values for late September. /EC/
